VisionNetZero is associated partner in a Project which is funded by the Wyss-Foundation and locally implemented by Banco de Bosques. It consists of the purchase of several estancias bordering the El Rey National Park in the South-East. Three of these covering more than 11,000 ha have already been purchased (Los Puestos, Las Chacras, El Piquete), two additional purchases are close to finalization. It is anticipated that this project will protect a total of some 20,000 ha of native yungas forests with a similar biodiversity as the Las Lauras/La Reina Project. Additionally it is protecting the upper reaches of the Rio Del Valle, an important regional source of water supply and home to a very diverse population of various fish species like the dorado.
As with Las Lauras, it is anticipated that the whole project area will eventually be integrated into the Argentinian National Park system. Once this project is fully implemented a total area covering over 110,000 ha will be under protection in and around the El Rey National Park making it one of the largest protected native forests in Argentina.
The wildlife and plant monitoring of the project will be done jointly with the ongoing monitoring activities in Las Lauras / La Reina allowing also for joint scientific evaluations of the overall area.
